At Living for Liberation we design immersive learning experiences and curate content to help people liberate self, systems, and society. We provide professional development as well as print and digital resources to support educators, non-profit leaders, companies, and community organizers cultivate liberatory ways of knowing, being, and doing.
Dr. Michelle Sadrena Pledger is the founder of Living for Liberation, a professional development and publishing company that seeks to liberate self, others, and systems. She is also the Director of Liberation at the High Tech High Graduate School of Education, an institution that brings together practitioners, researchers and youth to address complex problems of practice in K-12 education and create more equitable, engaging learning environments for all students.
Dr. Pledger is committed to disrupting inequity in education and cultivating a community of practitioners who honor the lived experiences of all their students and educators. Her book, LIBERATE! Pocket-Sized Paradigms for Liberatory Learning is a must read for any educator who aspires to design educational experiences that are responsive to culturally and linguistically diverse young people. Whether it is through the vehicle of project-based learning, culturally responsive-sustaining pedagogy, or freedom facilitation, her hope is to develop educators and students who think critically, act empathetically, and live a life of liberation.
Curtis Taylor is currently serving as an Improvement Coach at High Tech High’s Center for Research on Equity & Innovation in San Diego, California, with 10+ years of teaching experience. Taylor's passion is for every student to see themselves as a brilliant mathematician. Because of his passion, Taylor has made equity in math his priority. He has served as the co-project director for the Lesson Study Fellowship at all High Tech High Schools, a collaborative effort to promote more equitable practices in math classrooms. Also, Taylor is a faculty member of High Tech High’s Graduate School of Education, where he directs and co-teaches the M.Ed in Teaching & Learning program of the San Diego Teacher Residency. Taylor holds a B.A in Elementary Education from Clemson University, a M.Ed. from the University of San Diego, and his Ed.D in Educational Leadership from the University of California San Diego. His dissertation focused on the impact of lesson studies on middle school teacher’s self-efficacy in culturally relevant mathematics instruction.
Mari Jones is the Director of the Deeper Learning Hub, a national practitioner hub whose mission is to spread deeper learning practices and ensure that more students across the country are achieving deeper learning outcomes. She is an Improvement Facilitator for the Center for Research on Equity and Innovation, and works with networks for school improvement across the country. She teaches the Foundations of Classroom Culture and Foundations of Student Centered Teaching for the San Diego Teacher Residency Program. She was an elementary educator for 14 years and turned her attention to supporting educators after focusing her M.Ed. Educational Leadership research on the intersection of project-based learning and social-emotional learning as important pathways that lead to the development of deeper learning competencies, and on professional development to support new teachers. She believes education is a form of activism and is passionate about promoting social change by empowering youth.
Rachel is a veteran educator with over 20 years of teaching and leadership experience in district and charter K-12 school settings. She currently works for the San Diego County Office of Education supporting the development of equity-centered positive school climates and student wellness programs for schools across the county. Her belief in connectedness and meaningful, student-centered, justice-oriented learning experiences drive her passion for education reform, starting with the adults on the ground who impact student experiences everyday. She grounds her work in the value of stories to bring people together and leverages her expertise in curriculum design and professional learning to design intentional, impactful and freedom-filled professional growth experiences.
